Floor Space Is Only Part of a Warehouse's Capacity
Two warehouses with identical floor plans can hold very different amounts of inventory if one racks pallets four levels high and the other stacks only two. Total storage capacity depends on usable floor area, vertical racking height, and how much of that floor area realistically holds product once aisles and clearances are subtracted — not the raw square footage alone.
The Formula
Vertical Levels = floor(Rack Height ÷ Pallet Height)
Positions per Level = floor(Usable Floor Area ÷ Pallet Footprint)
Total Positions = Positions per Level × Vertical Levels
Utilization percentage accounts for aisles, dock space, and clearance that can't hold racking — a facility with wide aisles for forklifts will have a lower usable percentage than one built for tighter, narrow-aisle equipment.
