Two Limits, Only One of Which Wins

A pallet load is capped by two independent constraints — how many boxes physically fit within its footprint and stack height, and how much total weight it's rated to carry — and the lower of the two always determines the real answer. Light, bulky boxes usually run out of space first; dense, heavy boxes usually hit the weight limit first. This calculator checks both and tells you which one is actually constraining your load.

The Formula

Boxes per Layer = floor(Pallet L ÷ Box L) × floor(Pallet W ÷ Box W)  [best orientation]
Layers = floor(Pallet Max Height ÷ Box Height)
Boxes by Space = Boxes per Layer × Layers
Boxes by Weight = floor(Pallet Max Weight ÷ Box Weight)
Final Count = min(Boxes by Space, Boxes by Weight)

The calculator tests the box footprint in both orientations — as given, and rotated 90° — and uses whichever orientation packs more boxes per layer.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Warehouse and logistics planning — palletizing efficiently reduces the number of pallet positions, and therefore freight cost, needed to ship a given quantity of product.
  • Freight quoting — carriers often price by pallet count, so maximizing boxes per pallet directly reduces shipping cost.
  • Warehouse racking capacity — knowing boxes per pallet feeds directly into total storage capacity calculations for a rack system.
  • Avoiding overweight pallets — catching a weight-limited load before it's built prevents a rejected shipment or forklift safety issue.
