Storage Unit Cost Calculator

The Advertised Rate Is Rarely the Whole Bill

Self-storage facilities quote a per-square-foot or flat monthly rate, but the number that hits your card each month usually includes insurance and a one-time admin or setup fee layered on top. This calculator adds all three together across the full rental period, so the total cost of a lease is clear before you sign, not discovered a few months in.

The Formula

Total Cost = ((Sq Ft × Rate per Sq Ft) + Insurance) × Months + Admin Fee

Insurance is applied monthly and compounds across the full duration, while the admin fee is added once, reflecting how most facilities structure their billing.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Comparing facilities — two units with similar advertised rates can have very different total costs once admin fees and mandatory insurance are factored in.
  • Budgeting a move-related storage gap — estimating total cost for the months between move-out and move-in dates.
  • Deciding between unit sizes — seeing the full-period cost difference between, say, a 5×10 and a 10×10 unit makes the size-versus-cost tradeoff concrete.
  • Business inventory storage — small businesses renting overflow storage can project the annual cost impact before committing to a lease.
Example: 6-month lease at $1.50 per sq ft/month, no admin fee or insurance
Unit sizeSquare feetMonthly cost6-month total
5×525$37.50$225.00
5×1050$75.00$450.00
10×10100$150.00$900.00
10×15150$225.00$1,350.00
10×20200$300.00$1,800.00

Computed directly from the formula above at a $1.50/sq ft monthly rate; actual rates vary widely by region and facility climate control.
