Since the mid-2010s, major carriers have billed shipments by whichever is greater: the package's actual weight, or its "dimensional weight" — a figure calculated purely from box size, regardless of what's inside. A large, lightly packed box for a small item can quietly cost more to ship than its real weight would suggest. This calculator sizes the box around your item with padding, then computes the dimensional weight a carrier would use to bill it.
The Formula
Dimensional Weight = (L × W × H) ÷ Divisor
Padding is added to both sides of each dimension, since cushioning surrounds the item on every face. The divisor is carrier- and service-specific — a smaller divisor produces a higher (more expensive) dimensional weight.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Choosing box size before shipping — a snugger box with less padding can meaningfully lower dimensional weight, and therefore shipping cost, on bulky-but-light items.
- Comparing carrier rates — the same box can produce different billed weights depending on which carrier's divisor applies.
- E-commerce shipping cost estimation — sellers use dimensional weight to price shipping accurately instead of undercharging on large, light packages.
- Packaging design — product teams size retail packaging partly around keeping dimensional weight low.
