Packing Material Calculator
Running Out of Tape Halfway Through a Move
Boxes are only half the packing supply problem — tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper run out unpredictably if you buy them by guesswork. This calculator scales all four supplies together from a single starting point: your home size and how many fragile items you're packing, using the same industry rule-of-thumb ratios movers use to quote supply lists.
The Formula
Tape Rolls = ceil(Total Boxes ÷ 10)
Bubble Wrap Rolls = ceil(Fragile Items ÷ 15)
Packing Paper = Total Boxes × 3 lb
Each fragile item beyond the base box count adds partial demand for an extra box (one added per five fragile items) and its own share of bubble wrap, since fragile items are assumed to need individual cushioning rather than shared newspaper wrap.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Pre-move supply shopping — buying tape and bubble wrap in one trip instead of several last-minute runs.
- Budgeting a DIY move — supply costs add up quickly; knowing quantities up front avoids over- or under-buying.
- Coordinating a packing timeline — knowing the box count in advance helps schedule how many packing sessions a household needs before moving day.
- Estimating for a moving company quote — some movers price full-service packing partly based on estimated box and material counts.
| Home size | Boxes | Tape rolls | Packing paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | 25 | 3 | 75 lb |
| 2 Bedroom | 50 | 5 | 150 lb |
| 4 Bedroom | 90 | 9 | 270 lb |
Base box counts and material ratios are industry rule-of-thumb estimates commonly published by moving and storage associations; actual needs vary with how much you own.
