The modern era brought purpose-made cushioning: shredded and crumpled paper refined into packing paper, molded pulp forms, and eventually a wave of plastics, foam sheets, loose-fill peanuts, and air-filled products. These engineered materials offered consistency, cleanliness, and cushioning tuned to the job, and they could be manufactured in vast, uniform quantities. Packing shifted from improvising with natural scraps to selecting the right designed material for the fragility of the contents.

The Happy Accident

One of the most beloved packing materials was invented entirely by accident, and for a completely different purpose. Bubble wrap began as an attempt to create a textured plastic wall covering, sealing air bubbles between two sheets of plastic. As wallpaper it failed, but its inventors eventually realized the air-filled sheet was an outstanding protective packaging material, cushioning fragile goods with pockets of trapped air. A product designed for walls became one of the most iconic cushioning materials ever made, and a source of irresistible popping.

Why It Still Comes Down to Filling Voids

Despite all this progress, the fundamental principle has not changed since the days of straw: protecting a fragile item means surrounding it with something that fills the empty space and absorbs shocks, keeping the item from moving and cushioning any impact.
