Shipping Crate Lumber Calculator
Shipping Crate Lumber Calculator
Building a custom wooden shipping crate? This calculator estimates the total board feet of lumber needed to panel all six sides.
Surface Area = 2 x ((L x W) + (L x H) + (W x H))
Board Feet Needed = Surface Area x Board Feet Factor
Example
A 4ft x 3ft x 3ft crate, standard board feet factor of 1.0 per sq ft:
Surface Area = 66 sq ft → ~66.0 board feet
This Estimates a Fully Enclosed Crate
This calculation covers all six panel faces of a fully enclosed crate - open-frame or skid-style crates, common for heavier industrial equipment shipments, use considerably less lumber since they skip full panel coverage in favor of a structural frame.
Add Extra for Waste and Reinforcement
Adding roughly 10-15% extra lumber beyond this raw surface-area estimate is common practice to account for cutting waste, corner reinforcement framing, and skid/base construction not captured in a simple panel-area calculation.
