A technician can diagnose much of what ails an air conditioner with nothing but two temperature readings — the difference between the air going in and the air coming out. From Sensation to Instrument

Hot and cold began as pure sensation, unreliable and personal — the same water can feel warm to a cold hand and cool to a hot one. Early experimenters, including Galileo, built “thermoscopes” that showed temperature changes but had no fixed scale. The challenge was to make temperature objective: a quantity anyone could read the same way.

Fixing the Scale

The breakthrough was reproducible reference points. Fahrenheit developed a reliable mercury thermometer and a scale anchored to fixed points, while Celsius later based his scale on the freezing and boiling of water. With agreed reference points, thermometers everywhere could be calibrated to read alike, and temperature became a measurement instead of an opinion.

The Temperature Split

A reliable thermometer makes a powerful diagnostic possible.
