Those numbers are the first thing every chess player learns, and they are genuinely useful. They are also, strictly speaking, a convenient fiction: real piece value shifts with the position, and knowing where the numbers came from, and when they mislead, is the mark of a stronger player.
A Shorthand, Refined Over Centuries
The point values are an attempt to capture, in a single number, how much a piece contributes on average across many games. Various masters and analysts over the centuries proposed slightly different scales, but the familiar 1-3-3-5-9 emerged as the practical consensus, roughly reflecting how much material one side can lose in a trade before falling behind. The full starting army, king aside, totals thirty-nine points, a figure the calculator confirms. It is a distillation of centuries of practical experience, not a law derived from the rules.
The King Has No Number, and That Is the Point
The king is left out of the count because it can never be captured or traded, its loss ends the game, so a point value would be meaningless. Interestingly, in the endgame the king becomes an active fighting piece, and analysts sometimes assign it a rough combat value of around four points to reflect that, but only as a guide to how strong it is as an attacker, never as tradeable material.
The Values Bend to the Position
The biggest truth the flat numbers hide is that piece value is contextual.

The bishop-pair bonus is a well-known refinement: two bishops working together cover both color complexes and are worth slightly more than their six points suggest, which is why many strong players quietly value the bishop a hair above the knight. And a knight, useless across a wide-open board, can dominate a clogged one where its jumping ability shines. The single number cannot express any of this.
Beyond Material: What Engines See
Modern chess engines demonstrate how incomplete raw material is. They evaluate positions in hundredths of a pawn, called centipawns, and factor in king safety, piece activity, pawn structure, space, and initiative, often judging a position winning for the side with less material because those other factors outweigh it. A sacrifice that gives up material for a devastating attack is exactly a case where the point count says one thing and the truth says another. Material is the starting estimate; the position is the verdict.
Using the Material Count Well
