The standard chess point system - pawn 1, knight and bishop 3, rook 5, queen 9 - is the widely used shorthand players use to evaluate material balance, though real piece value shifts with position, activity, and game phase.
Worked example
For a full standard starting army (8 pawns, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, 1 queen):
Value = (8x1) + (2x3) + (2x3) + (2x5) + (1x9) = 39.0 points
This result matches the well-known total material value of a full standard chess army (39 points, excluding the king, which is not assigned a point value since it can never be captured or traded) - confirming the calculation against a widely cited chess reference figure.
Remember this is a simplification - a knight is often stronger than a bishop in a closed, blocked position despite sharing the same nominal 3-point value, illustrating why material count alone never tells the complete evaluation story.
