The huge number of possible secret codes is exactly what makes Mastermind's information-theoretic guessing strategy genuinely interesting mathematically - narrowing down possibilities using peg feedback is far more efficient than trying to brute-force every combination.
Worked example
For the standard Mastermind setup (6 colors, 4 positions, repeats allowed):
Combinations = 6^4 = 1,296 possible combinations
This result matches the real, well-known total for standard Mastermind exactly - 1,296 possible secret codes is far too many to guess through exhaustively within the game's typical 10-12 guess limit, which is precisely why the game rewards skillful deduction over random guessing.
