Increment Time Adds Up More Than It Looks
A "10 minute base + 5 second increment" chess clock isn't really a 10-minute game — the increment, added back after every move, can extend a long game well past the base time. Fischer time controls (named after Bobby Fischer, who popularized the format) were designed to reduce time pressure in the endgame by guaranteeing a small amount of thinking time on every move, no matter how long the game runs.
The Formula
Average Time per Move = Total Time / Expected Moves
A Worked Example
A 10-minute base clock with a 5-second increment, over an expected 40-move game: base time is 600 seconds, plus 40 × 5 = 200 seconds of increment, for a total of 800 seconds (13.33 minutes) — a third more than the base time alone. That works out to an average of exactly 20 seconds available per move across the game.

These category boundaries follow common tournament conventions (broadly consistent with FIDE classifications); exact cutoffs vary slightly between organizing bodies.
