Player Count Is the Hidden Multiplier on Game Length

Adding a fourth player to a game doesn't just add one more turn to each round — it multiplies total playtime by roughly a third compared to a three-player game with the same turn count and pace. Estimating how long a game will actually take means multiplying turns, time per turn, and player count together, not just eyeballing the box's stated play time.

The Formula

Total Game Time = Number of Turns × Average Turn Time × Number of Players

"Number of Turns" here means turns per player (a full round through the table counts as one turn for each player), so this formula captures the full multiplayer structure rather than a single player's turn count.

A Worked Example

A game with 20 turns per player, an average of 1.5 minutes per turn, and 4 players: 20 × 1.5 × 4 = 120 minutes total — exactly 2 hours. Cutting the player count to 2 with the same turns and pace would halve that to 1 hour.

  • Comparing games for a group size — the same title can run very differently at 2 players versus 5, which this formula makes explicit.
