Scrabble letter values are deliberately weighted inversely to how common each letter is in English - common letters like E and A are worth just 1 point, while rare letters like Q and Z are worth 10 points, balancing the game's difficulty against its reward.
Worked example
For the word "QUIZ" with no word multiplier:
Q(10) + U(1) + I(1) + Z(10) = 22 points
This calculator uses base letter values only - remember to factor in any double or triple letter/word score board bonuses separately (or via the word multiplier field) when scoring an actual game play, since board bonus squares can significantly change the final score beyond the raw letter values alone.
