Resource Trade Ratio Calculator

What Counts as a "Fair" Trade

Resource-trading games — Catan, Settlers-style economic games, and many worker-placement titles — assign relative value to different resources, whether through scarcity, production odds, or house-rule agreement. A fair trade ratio converts one resource's value into an equivalent amount of another, giving both sides a concrete number to negotiate around instead of a gut-feeling guess.

The Formula

Fair Trade Ratio = Value of A / Value of B
Resource B Needed = Amount of A × Fair Trade Ratio

A Worked Example

If Resource A is valued at 3 points per unit and Resource B at 1 point per unit, the fair trade ratio is 3 ÷ 1 = 3 — meaning 1 unit of A is worth 3 units of B. Trading 2 units of A should fairly return 2 × 3 = 6 units of B.

Where This Gets Used

  • Negotiating in-game trades — putting a concrete number behind a trade offer instead of relying purely on intuition or negotiation pressure.
  • House-ruled value systems — groups that assign explicit point values to resources (common in customized or homebrew variants) can use this to keep trades consistent.
  • Evaluating lopsided offers — quickly checking whether a proposed 3-for-1 trade is actually fair given each resource's relative scarcity or production rate.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the value of Resource A per unit.
  2. Enter the value of Resource B per unit.
  3. Enter the amount of Resource A being offered in the trade.
  4. Select Calculate to see the fair trade ratio and how much of Resource B that amount should be worth.
