The Mechanical Causes Behind a "Wrong" Multiplier

A printer that consistently under- or over-extrudes usually has a specific mechanical cause, not a random error. The extruder's drive gear - typically a hobbed brass or hardened steel gear that bites into the filament to push it - can wear smooth over months of use, especially with abrasive filaments like those containing carbon fiber or glass fiber fill, gradually losing grip and causing progressively worse under-extrusion that a one-time multiplier correction won't keep up with. In Bowden-tube setups, the PTFE tube itself can compress slightly over time or develop a rougher internal surface, adding friction that the extruder motor has to overcome, which shows up as inconsistent, rather than simply constant, under-extrusion.

Temperature-Dependent Flow Adds Another Variable

Plastic viscosity changes with temperature, so a multiplier tuned at one nozzle temperature isn't guaranteed to be exactly correct at a different temperature - a print profile that switches temperature mid-print for a different material or feature can introduce small flow inconsistencies that look like an extrusion calibration problem but are really a temperature-viscosity interaction.

Applying an extrusion multiplier correction to mask a worn-out extruder gear treats a symptom that will keep getting worse, rather than the underlying mechanical cause - the multiplier you calculate today will likely be wrong again in a few weeks as gear wear continues to progress, whereas replacing the actual worn part fixes the root cause once. Reaching for the slicer-side multiplier first is reasonable for material-specific tuning, but if the same printer needs an increasingly aggressive multiplier correction over time regardless of what filament is loaded, that's the specific pattern worth investigating as a hardware issue rather than continuing to compensate for in software.
