Smoking Cost Calculator

A Habit's Price Tag, Compounded

A daily cigarette cost looks small in isolation, but the same small number repeated every day for years adds up to a figure most smokers have never actually calculated. This tool takes cigarettes per day, pack size, and price and projects the cost forward from daily to weekly, monthly, yearly, and optionally across a full smoking history.

The Formula

Daily Cost = (Cigarettes per Day ÷ Cigarettes per Pack) × Price per Pack
Weekly Cost = Daily Cost × 7
Monthly Cost = Daily Cost × 30.44
Yearly Cost = Daily Cost × 365.25

The monthly and yearly multipliers (30.44 and 365.25) use the average length of a month and year including leap years, rather than a flat 30- or 365-day assumption, for a more accurate long-run projection.

Worked Example

Cost projection for one pack (20 cigarettes) per day at $8.00/pack
PeriodCost
Daily$8.00
Weekly$56.00
Monthly$243.52
Yearly$2,922.00
Over 10 years$29,220.00

Actual pack prices vary substantially by region and by whether local tobacco taxes are high or low — enter your own local price for an accurate figure.

Why This Number Is Worth Calculating

  • Comparing against savings goals — a yearly smoking cost figure translates directly into what that money could fund instead, from a vacation to a retirement contribution.
  • Supporting a quit attempt — concrete financial numbers are a commonly used motivational tool in smoking cessation programs, alongside health-based reasons.
  • Lifetime cost perspective — entering years smoked extends the projection into a single lifetime total, which tends to be a far larger number than the daily or monthly figure suggests.
