Bradford Factor Calculator
Bradford Factor Calculator
The Bradford Factor is a widely used HR absence management formula that deliberately weights frequent, unpredictable short absences much more heavily than one longer, planned absence covering the same total number of days.
B = Sā¬ā x D
where S = number of separate absence episodes (spells), D = total days absent
Example
5 separate absence episodes totaling 8 days absent:
B = 5ā¬ā x 8 = 200 (high concern - typically triggers formal review)
The Core Insight: Frequency Matters More Than Duration
Consider two employees each absent for exactly 10 days over a year: one takes 10 separate one-day absences (S=10, D=10), scoring 1,000, while the other takes a single 10-day absence for a planned medical procedure (S=1, D=10), scoring just 10. The logic behind this dramatic weighting difference is that frequent, unpredictable short absences typically disrupt team scheduling and workflow coverage far more severely than one absence that can be planned around in advance.
How Organizations Use This Score
| Score Range | Typical Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Under 50 | Low concern |
| 50-199 | Moderate concern - worth a supportive conversation |
| 200-499 | High concern - often triggers formal review |
| 500+ | Very high concern |
Organizations using this framework typically pair it with supportive conversations rather than purely punitive responses, since frequent absences can also signal an underlying health condition, caregiving burden, or workplace issue worth understanding rather than simply penalizing.
