Example

A 10 m steel member (coefficient ~1.17├ù10Ôü╗ÔüÁ per ┬░C) heated by 50┬░C:

Change = 10 x 0.0000117 x 50 = 0.00585 m (new length: 10.00585 m)

Different Materials, Different Rates

Steel, aluminum, concrete, and plastics all expand at meaningfully different rates per degree of temperature change - aluminum, for example, typically expands roughly twice as much as steel for the same temperature swing, which matters enormously when combining dissimilar materials in a single assembly.
