Average Gift Size Calculator
Why total raised can hide important trends
A rising fundraising total feels like unambiguous good news, but it can mask a shift in donor composition - tracking average gift size alongside the total reveals whether growth is coming from more donors, larger gifts, or some mix of both.
Worked example
For $45,000 raised across 300 individual gifts:
Average Gift = 45000 / 300 = 150
| Scenario | What It Suggests |
|---|---|
| Total up, average gift up | Donors giving more generously per gift |
| Total up, average gift down | Growth driven by donor count, not gift size |
| Total flat, average gift up | Fewer but larger gifts - possible donor attrition at the low end |
