Why total raised can hide important trends

A rising fundraising total feels like unambiguous good news, but it can mask a shift in donor composition - tracking average gift size alongside the total reveals whether growth is coming from more donors, larger gifts, or some mix of both.

Worked example

For $45,000 raised across 300 individual gifts:

Average Gift = 45000 / 300 = 150

Scenario	What It Suggests
Total up, average gift up	Donors giving more generously per gift
Total up, average gift down	Growth driven by donor count, not gift size
Total flat, average gift up	Fewer but larger gifts - possible donor attrition at the low end
