The Energy of Motion, and Why Speed Dominates It
Anything in motion carries kinetic energy, and because that energy depends on the square of velocity rather than velocity itself, speed matters far more than mass when it comes to impact severity. A vehicle going twice as fast doesn't carry twice the kinetic energy — it carries four times as much. This single relationship explains why speed limits matter so much more than vehicle weight limits for collision safety.
The Formula
KE is kinetic energy in joules, m is mass in kilograms, and v is velocity in meters per second. Because velocity is squared, kinetic energy grows quadratically — a fact with real consequences anywhere speed and impact intersect.
Where the Square Term Has Consequences
- Vehicle collision analysis — crash energy that has to be absorbed by crumple zones and restraint systems scales with the square of impact speed, not linearly.
- Ballistics — a bullet's stopping power is far more sensitive to its velocity than its mass, which is exactly why muzzle velocity is such a heavily quoted specification.
- Wind and hydro energy — turbine power output scales with the cube of wind or water speed, building directly on this same velocity-squared relationship in the underlying kinetic energy of the moving fluid.
- Flywheel energy storage — spinning mass stores kinetic energy that scales with the square of rotational speed, which is why flywheels are spun as fast as material strength allows.

The bullet's kinetic energy comes almost entirely from its high velocity rather than its mass — a useful illustration of how strongly the v² term dominates the equation.
