Reading an ultrasound fluid assessment
Amniotic Fluid Index is measured by ultrasound, summing the deepest vertical fluid pocket in each of four uterine quadrants into one combined figure used to screen for abnormally low or high amniotic fluid levels.
Worked example
For an AFI of 12 cm:
Result = 12.0 cm (Normal range)
| AFI | Classification |
|---|---|
| Below 5 cm | Oligohydramnios (low fluid) |
| 5-24 cm | Normal range |
| Above 24 cm | Polyhydramnios (high fluid) |
Both abnormally low and high fluid levels warrant further clinical evaluation, since either can be associated with a range of underlying conditions depending on gestational age and overall clinical picture.
