Two Numbers Decide Your Fertile Window

Ovulation prediction from a calendar comes down to two lengths: how long your cycle runs, and how long your luteal phase (ovulation to next period) lasts. The follicular phase — the stretch before ovulation — is the part that actually stretches or shrinks from cycle to cycle. The luteal phase is comparatively fixed for a given person. That asymmetry is what makes counting backward from a known or expected period date more reliable than counting forward from the last one, and it's the logic this calculator uses.

The Formula

Ovulation Day = Last Period Start Date + (Cycle Length − Luteal Phase Length)
Fertile Window = Ovulation Day − 5 days  to  Ovulation Day + 1 day

Subtracting the luteal phase from the cycle length isolates the follicular phase — the number of days from the start of a period until ovulation. The five-day lead on the fertile window accounts for sperm survival in the reproductive tract, and the one extra day accounts for the egg's own short viability after release.

Computed with the calculator's own formula. Most luteal phases fall in a narrower 11–17 day band than this table shows — the wider spread here is only to make the effect visible. This calculator accepts values from 8 to 20 days.

Why the Cycle-Length Version Is Still Useful

  • Cycle tracking from day one — if you log your last period start reliably but don't track ovulation symptoms, this gives a forward estimate without waiting for other signs.
  • Timing intercourse or insemination — the five-day fertile window covers the practical planning window fertility guidance generally recommends.
  • Spotting an irregular pattern — running the same cycle length with different assumed luteal phases shows how sensitive the estimate is, which is a useful sanity check if your cycles vary.
