Why Conversion Efficiency Is So Low Compared to Raw Fuel Content
Biomass-to-electricity conversion efficiency is commonly much lower than the raw fuel's total energy content - a typical biomass power plant converts only around 20-30% of the fuel's energy into usable electricity, with the majority lost primarily as waste heat during combustion and thermodynamic conversion.
Combined Heat and Power Improves Overall Utilization
Combined heat and power (CHP) biomass systems capture and use some of that otherwise-wasted heat for industrial processes or building heating, substantially improving total energy utilization even though electrical conversion efficiency alone remains similarly limited.
