Why Inverters Are Deliberately Sized Smaller Than Total Panel Wattage

Solar panels rarely produce their full rated (STC) output simultaneously in real-world conditions - deliberately sizing an inverter somewhat smaller than total panel wattage, at a DC-to-AC ratio commonly around 1.15-1.25, improves inverter utilization throughout the day without meaningfully "clipping" (losing) usable energy at peak production.

Finding the Right Balance

Too high an oversizing ratio risks meaningful clipping losses during peak sun hours, while too low a ratio (an inverter close to or larger than total panel wattage) leaves the inverter underutilized most of the day - system designers balance this ratio against local sun conditions and panel orientation.
