Solar Carbon Offset Calculator

Solar Carbon Offset Calculator

Quantify the environmental impact of a solar installation - this calculator converts annual solar output into CO2 emissions avoided.

Annual CO2 Offset = Annual Solar Output(kWh) x Grid Emissions Factor(kg CO2/kWh)

Example

8,000 kWh annual solar output, 0.4 kg CO2/kWh grid emissions factor:

Annual CO2 Offset = 8,000 x 0.4 = ~3.20 metric tons per year

Why the Grid Emissions Factor Varies So Much

This factor varies significantly by region depending on the local electricity generation mix - a grid relying heavily on coal-fired power has a much higher emissions factor than one relying heavily on hydro, nuclear, or existing wind and solar, directly changing how much a given amount of solar generation actually offsets.

Using Your Actual Local Grid Factor

Looking up your specific utility or regional grid's published emissions factor (rather than using a generic average) gives a much more accurate and locally relevant offset estimate than this calculator's default reference value.
