Hourly to Salary Calculator
Comparing an Hourly Offer to a Salaried One
Job offers rarely arrive in the same unit — one role quotes $25 an hour, another quotes $54,000 a year, and comparing them by eye invites error. This calculator converts in either direction, from an hourly rate to its annual equivalent or from an annual salary back down to an hourly rate, using the actual hours and weeks you'd work rather than a generic assumption.
The Formula
Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Week × Weeks per Year)
Both directions use the same relationship, just solved for a different variable. The default assumption is a 40-hour week across 52 weeks a year, but both figures are adjustable for part-time schedules or unpaid time off.
A Worked Example
| Pay Period | Amount |
|---|---|
| Annual | $52,000.00 |
| Monthly | $4,333.33 |
| Semimonthly | $2,166.67 |
| Biweekly | $2,000.00 |
| Daily (5-day week) | $200.00 |
Reverse direction: a $65,000 annual salary at the same 40-hour, 52-week schedule works out to $31.25/hour.
Where This Matters
- Comparing job offers — converting both offers to the same unit (annual or hourly) removes the guesswork from deciding which pays more.
- Freelance or contract rate-setting — working backward from a target annual income to a required hourly billing rate, accounting for weeks not worked.
- Part-time schedule planning — adjusting hours per week shows the real annual income impact of dropping to part-time status.
