Why turnover time is a key filtration benchmark
Turnover time measures how long it takes the pump and filter to cycle a volume of water equal to the entire pool once - it is one of the clearest indicators of whether a pool's circulation system is adequately sized for its volume.
Worked example
For a 20,000-gallon pool with a pump moving 50 gallons per minute:
Turnover = 20000 / (50 x 60) = 6.67 hours

Faster turnover generally means better water clarity and more effective chemical distribution, but it also means higher pump energy costs - most residential pool owners balance these by running the pump for roughly 1-2 full turnovers per day rather than continuously.
