Undersized Heaters Never Catch Up
A pool heater that's too small doesn't just heat slowly — on cold nights or windy days, heat loss can outpace what an undersized unit can deliver, and the pool never reaches target temperature at all. Sizing correctly means matching the heater's BTU/hr output against the actual rate of heat loss from the pool's surface, which depends on surface area and how many degrees of temperature rise are needed.
The Formula
The heat loss factor is an industry rule of thumb of roughly 12 BTU/hr per square foot of surface area, per degree Fahrenheit of desired temperature rise, for an uncovered pool. A pool cover cuts evaporative and convective heat loss substantially, so the calculator applies a reduced factor (60% of the uncovered value) when a cover is in use.

A cover cuts the required heater size by 40% on this example — using one consistently can mean a meaningfully smaller (and cheaper) heater installation, or faster heat-up on an existing unit.
Where This Calculation Matters
- New heater purchases — choosing a unit rated below the calculated requirement means the pool may never reach target temperature during cool weather.
- Extending swim season — heating a pool to swimmable temperatures in early spring or late fall requires more capacity than mid-summer top-offs.
