The Figure Behind Covers, Heaters, and Evaporation Estimates

Surface area — not volume — is the input that drives pool cover sizing, heater capacity, and evaporation loss estimates, since all three depend on how much water is exposed to air, not how deep the pool is. Getting this number right avoids buying an oversized (and overpriced) cover or an undersized heater. The calculation itself is straightforward geometry, applied separately for each of the three common pool shapes.

The Formulas

Rectangular: Area = Length × Width
Circular: Area = π × r²
Oval: Area = π × (Length/2) × (Width/2)

The oval formula treats the pool as a true ellipse, using the standard ellipse-area formula of π times the semi-major axis times the semi-minor axis.

A 24-ft circular pool and a 40×20-ft oval pool cover a fairly similar footprint of land, but the oval's greater length gives it noticeably more surface area — and therefore a bigger cover and more evaporation exposure.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Sizing a pool cover or solar blanket — covers are sold and priced by surface area, and an inaccurate figure leads to an ill-fitting purchase.
  • Heater sizing — heat loss and required BTU/hr output both scale directly with the exposed surface area, not pool volume.
  • Evaporation and chemical off-gassing estimates — both processes happen at the water's surface, making area the relevant figure rather than total gallons.
