Pool water pH that drifts too low turns water corrosive to equipment and irritating to swimmers' eyes and skin, while pH that climbs too high causes cloudy water and reduces chlorine's sanitizing effectiveness. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is the standard chemical used to raise pH.
Worked example
For a 20,000-gallon pool currently at pH 7.0, targeting pH 7.4:
Dose = (20000/10000) x ((7.4-7.0)/0.2) x 6 = 24.0 oz soda ash
This guideline assumes typical total alkalinity - higher alkalinity buffers the water and resists pH change more strongly, so actual results can vary. Add chemicals gradually, retest after each dose, and never add the full calculated amount in one shot for a large adjustment.
