A 60 fps stream needs a noticeably higher bitrate than 30 fps at the same resolution, since the encoder has to represent nearly twice as many frames per second of footage.
How the Calculator Picks a Value
The calculator returns the full published range for your chosen resolution and frame rate, plus a suggested starting midpoint. The actual ideal bitrate within that range still depends on content complexity — a static webcam talking-head can sit near the low end, while fast-motion gameplay or sports benefit from pushing toward the high end — along with your codec (H.265/AV1 compress more efficiently than H.264 at the same visual quality) and, critically, your available upload bandwidth.
Where This Matters
- Configuring OBS or a hardware encoder — before going live, you need a starting bitrate value rather than guessing and finding out mid-stream that viewers are buffering.
- Sizing your upload connection — comparing the recommended bitrate against your actual measured upload speed tells you whether your current connection can support the resolution you want.
- Diagnosing stream quality complaints — if viewers report pixelation during motion, checking your configured bitrate against the recommended range for your resolution is often the first troubleshooting step.
