Final Length = Sum(Clip Lengths) - (Number of Transitions x Overlap Per Transition)
Example
Four clips totaling 53 seconds, 0.5-second overlap at each of 3 transitions:
Overlap Total = 1.5s → 51.5 seconds final timeline length
Why Transitions Shorten the Total
Crossfade or overlap transitions between clips shorten the final combined runtime compared to simply adding up individual clip lengths, since overlapping frames are shared between two clips during the transition rather than adding extra time on top.
Useful for Planning Against a Target Runtime
Calculating this final length upfront - rather than discovering the actual runtime only after fully assembling the edit - helps plan clip selection and pacing against a target total runtime, especially important for platforms with strict length requirements.
