Isolating a campaign's actual impact
Brand lift studies compare an exposed group against an unexposed control group on recall or awareness questions - the difference between the two groups isolates the campaign's genuine impact from baseline brand awareness that existed regardless.
Worked example
For 45% recall in the exposed group versus 30% recall in the control group:
Absolute Lift = 45 - 30 = 15 percentage points
Relative Lift = (15 / 30) x 100 = +15.0 percentage points (50.0% relative lift)
Frequently asked questions
Why report both absolute and relative lift? Absolute lift (percentage points) shows the raw difference, while relative lift (percentage change) shows that difference relative to the baseline - a 15-point lift means something very different starting from a 5% baseline versus a 60% baseline, which relative lift captures more clearly.
What counts as a meaningful lift? This varies significantly by industry, campaign type, and baseline awareness level - always compare results against your own historical campaigns and category benchmarks rather than a single universal target.
