Where uneven bass response actually comes from
Standing waves, called room modes, form between parallel surfaces at frequencies where the room dimension equals a multiple of half the sound wavelength - these frequencies get artificially boosted at some points in the room and cancelled at others, causing notoriously uneven bass response.
Worked example
For a 4-meter room dimension:
1st mode = 343 / (2 x 4) = 42.88 Hz (1st), 85.76 Hz (2nd), 128.64 Hz (3rd)
Calculate this separately for each of a room's three dimensions (length, width, height) to find all axial mode frequencies - a room with similar length and width dimensions tends to have overlapping, more severe room modes than one with intentionally varied dimensions.
Acoustic treatment (bass traps) and speaker/listening position adjustments are the two main tools used to manage the uneven bass response these standing waves create.
