Decibels are logarithmic, which is why the scale feels unintuitive at first — conversation at 60 dB carries roughly a thousand times more sound energy than a 30 dB whisper, not just twice as much, and combining two equal 60 dB sources only adds about 3 dB total rather than doubling the number.
