A speaker box acting like a resonating bottle

A ported speaker enclosure behaves like a Helmholtz resonator - the same physics that makes blowing across a bottle opening produce a specific pitch - where air in the port acts as a moving mass and air in the sealed box acts as a spring.

Worked example

For a 20 cm² port, 10cm long, in a 30-liter box:

Fb = 40.95 Hz

The end correction term accounts for air movement just outside the port opening on both ends, which effectively behaves as if the port were somewhat longer than its actual physical length - omitting this correction produces a noticeably inaccurate tuning frequency estimate.

Port tuning frequency reinforces bass output right around that specific frequency, which is why subwoofer box design carefully balances port dimensions against box volume to target a desired bass response.
