The same math, a completely different interpretation
Infant BMI is calculated with the exact same formula used for adults, but the resulting number means something entirely different - pediatricians plot it against age-and-sex-specific growth chart percentiles rather than fixed adult BMI categories.
Worked example
For a baby weighing 7.5 kg at 65 cm length:
BMI = 7.5 / (0.65)² = 17.75 kg/m2
Never compare this number against adult BMI categories (underweight, normal, overweight) - infant body proportions change substantially and predictably during the first two years of life, which is exactly why pediatric-specific growth chart percentiles, not fixed BMI thresholds, are the correct interpretation tool.
