Why formula volume gives a reliable calorie estimate
Standard-concentration infant formula is manufactured to a consistent caloric density, roughly 20 kcal per fluid ounce (about 0.67 kcal per milliliter) - this standardization is what makes formula volume alone a fairly reliable way to estimate total calories consumed.
Worked example
For 150 mL of standard-concentration formula:
Calories = 150 x 0.67 = 100.5 kcal
Specialized or concentrated formulas (used for specific medical or nutritional needs) can have different caloric density than standard formula - always check your specific product's label rather than assuming the standard 0.67 kcal/mL figure applies universally.
