A rough guideline, not a precise timeline
Tooth eruption timing varies enormously between individual children - this is a widely used approximate guideline for the typical range, not a formula predicting any specific child's exact tooth eruption schedule.
Worked example
For an 18-month-old:
Expected Teeth = 18 - 6 = ~12 teeth
All 20 primary (baby) teeth are typically in place by around 30-33 months - some perfectly healthy children's teeth come in noticeably earlier or later than this rule of thumb suggests, so treat significant deviations as a conversation starter with your pediatric dentist rather than a cause for concern on its own.
