Tracking length growth over time, not just a single measurement
Length growth velocity is fastest in the first few months of life and gradually slows throughout the first year - tracking the rate between measurements, not just a single length reading, reveals whether growth is following an expected trajectory.
Worked example
For a baby growing from 50cm to 54cm over 1 month:
Monthly Growth Rate = (54 - 50) / 1 = 4.0 cm/month
This 4 cm/month rate is consistent with commonly cited typical early infant growth (often 3-4 cm per month in the first few months) - this is informational only, not a substitute for your pediatrician's assessment using full growth percentile charts.
