The standard concrete quality control test
Compressive strength testing loads a cylindrical concrete sample axially until it fails, dividing the failure load by the sample's cross-sectional area to find its actual compressive strength - the fundamental parameter used throughout concrete structural design.
Worked example
For a standard 150mm diameter cylinder failing at 530,000 N:
f'c = 530000 / (π x 75²) = 29.99 MPa
This result lands right at the common 30 MPa (roughly 4,350 psi) standard concrete design strength specification used widely in general structural construction, a useful reference point confirming the calculation against typical real-world concrete mix designs.
