Euler Column Buckling Calculator
Why slender columns fail by buckling, not crushing
A sufficiently slender column under axial load fails by suddenly bowing sideways (buckling) at a load well below what would actually crush the material - Euler's formula predicts exactly this critical buckling load.
Worked example
For a steel column (E=200 GPa) with 0.0001 m⁴ moment of inertia, 3m length, and pinned-pinned end conditions (K=1.0):
Pcr = (π² x 200e9 x 0.0001) / (1.0 x 3)² = 21,932.454 kN
The effective length factor K dramatically changes buckling resistance based on end support conditions: K=1.0 for pinned-pinned ends, K=0.5 for fixed-fixed ends (4x stronger against buckling), and K=2.0 for fixed-free ends (4x weaker) - the same physical column can have very different real buckling capacity depending purely on how its ends are supported.
