A Concrete Mix Ratio Hides a Shrinkage Step Most People Skip
Mix concrete by volume — say, 1 part cement to 2 parts sand to 4 parts aggregate — and the dry ingredients before mixing take up noticeably more space than the wet concrete they produce, because water and mixing pack the dry materials together and fill the air gaps between particles. Sizing cement bags off the wet, finished volume without correcting for that shrinkage consistently comes up short.
The Formula
Cement Fraction = Cement Part ÷ (Cement + Sand + Aggregate Parts)
Cement Volume = Dry Volume × Cement Fraction
Bags = (Cement Volume × Density) ÷ Bag Weight
The calculator first scales the wet (finished, in-place) concrete volume up by 1.54, the standard construction industry allowance for the volume dry, loose materials occupy before mixing and compaction. It then works out cement's share of the total mix based on the ratio parts entered (1:2:4 by default, a common general-purpose mix), applies that fraction to the dry volume, and converts the resulting cement volume to a bag count using a standard cement density of 94 lb per cu ft (or 1,440 kg/m³) and the standard US 94 lb bag (or 50 kg metric bag).
Where This Calculation Matters
- Hand-mixed and small batch pours — footings, fence posts, and small slabs mixed on-site from bagged cement need an accurate bag count before the mixer starts running.
- Custom mix ratios — a richer 1:1.5:3 mix for higher-strength applications, or a leaner 1:3:6 mix for mass fill, changes the cement fraction and therefore the bag count substantially even for the same finished volume.
- Verifying delivered ready-mix — contractors sometimes use this calculation in reverse, checking that a delivered ready-mix load's cement content is consistent with the specified mix design.

100 cu ft of finished concrete at the default 1:2:4 mix ratio:

A standard 94 lb bag of cement occupies almost exactly 1 cu ft, which is why the bag count in imperial units works out numerically close to the cement volume itself.
