Block Walls Count in Whole Units, Not Square Footage

A concrete masonry unit wall is built one block at a time, so the real question isn't how many square feet of wall you have — it's how many individual blocks, each with a fixed face area, it takes to fill that footprint. The standard 16 in × 8 in block is the reference point most CMU wall estimates start from.

The Formula

Wall Area = (Wall Length × Wall Height) − Opening Area
Blocks Needed = ceil((Wall Area × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ Block Face Area)

The calculator subtracts door and window openings from the gross wall area, applies a waste allowance — 10% by default, within the typical 5 to 10% range for block work — and divides by the block's face area, defaulting to 0.89 sq ft for a standard 16 in × 8 in block. The result is rounded up, since a fraction of a block still requires cutting a whole one. Note that this estimate doesn't add extra area for the mortar joint between blocks; for higher precision, use the block's actual on-wall footprint including the joint.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Foundation and basement walls — CMU block is a common choice for below-grade walls, where the block count drives both material cost and mason labor time.
  • Retaining and garden walls — smaller block walls use the same face-area math, just with a shorter wall length and height.
  • Non-standard block sizes — larger format blocks (such as 12 in or 24 in units) have a different face area, which is why the block face area is an adjustable input rather than fixed to the 16 in × 8 in default.

Worked Example

A 30 ft × 8 ft wall (240 sq ft) with 20 sq ft of openings, using standard 0.89 sq ft blocks and the default 10% waste allowance:

Block count for a 30 ft × 8 ft wall

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select Imperial (ft, sq ft) or Metric (m, m²) units.
  2. Enter the Wall Length and Wall Height.
  3. Enter the Opening Area for doors and windows to subtract.
  4. Optionally adjust the Block Face Area — defaults to 0.89 sq ft for a standard 16 in × 8 in block.
  5. Optionally adjust the Waste % — defaults to 10%.
  6. Select Calculate to see the total number of blocks needed.
