Decking Runs One Way, Joists Run the Other
A deck's board count and its joist count come from two different measurements of the same footprint, because decking boards typically span the deck's length while joists run perpendicular underneath, spaced across the width. Getting the material list right means working out both directions separately, not just dividing total area by board size.
The Formula
Boards Needed = ceil((Rows × Length) ÷ Board Length × (1 + Waste %))
Joist Count = floor((Width × 12) ÷ Joist Spacing) + 1
The calculator first works out how many rows of decking fit across the deck's width, given a board face width that defaults to 5.5 in (standard for 5/4 decking boards). Each row runs the full deck length, so the total linear footage needed is rows times length, divided by the purchasable board length (12 ft by default) and bumped up by the waste allowance for cuts. Joist count is worked out separately using on-center spacing, defaulting to the common residential standard of 16 in on-center.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Board orientation — running decking the long way across a rectangular deck uses fewer full-length boards and fewer seams than running it the short way.
- Joist spacing and board thickness — thinner or composite decking generally requires tighter joist spacing than standard 16 in on-center to prevent flexing, so checking the manufacturer's span rating before ordering matters.
- Framing takeoffs — separating the decking board count from the joist count lets you price and order the visible surface material and the structural framing independently.
Worked Example
A 16 ft × 12 ft deck (192 sq ft), using the default board width, board length, joist spacing, and waste allowance:
