Dry Concrete Volume Calculator

Wet Concrete and Dry Materials Are Not the Same Volume

Cement, sand, and aggregate, measured loose and dry before mixing, take up noticeably more space than the finished wet concrete they produce. Water fills the gaps between particles and the mixing process compacts everything together, so a builder sizing raw material quantities off the finished pour volume alone will consistently underorder.

The Formula

Dry Volume = Wet Volume × 1.54

The 1.54 factor is a standard, widely used construction-industry conversion that accounts for the volume reduction that happens when loose dry cement, sand, and aggregate are combined with water and mixed into compacted wet concrete. Multiplying the wet, in-place volume you need by 1.54 gives the volume of dry materials to start with before mixing.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Sourcing raw materials for site-mixed concrete — anyone measuring out cement, sand, and aggregate by volume rather than working from bagged pre-mix needs this conversion before applying a mix ratio.
  • Cross-checking a cement bag count — this dry-volume step is the same one used internally by the Cement Bags Calculator, so the two figures should always agree for the same input volume.
  • Material delivery scheduling — ordering dry aggregate and sand by the truckload benefits from knowing the true dry volume required, not just the finished pour volume.

Dry Volume by Wet Volume

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select Cubic Feet or Cubic Meters.
  2. Enter the Wet Concrete Volume — the finished, in-place volume you need.
  3. Select Calculate to see the equivalent dry material volume.
