Total Probes = Ports x Hosts
Duration = Total Probes / Scan Rate
Example
A full 65,535-port scan of a single host at 1,000 ports/second:
Total Probes = 65,535 x 1 = 65,535 → Duration = 65,535 / 1,000 = 65.5 seconds (about 1.09 minutes)
Practical Notes
- Scanning many hosts multiplies duration linearly - a 65,535-port scan across 100 hosts takes roughly 100x longer than scanning just one host.
- Real-world scan rates vary hugely depending on network conditions, firewall rate-limiting, and whether the scan uses stealth techniques that intentionally slow down probes to avoid detection.
- Most practical scans target only the ~1,000 most common ports rather than the full 65,535 range, dramatically cutting scan time for routine reconnaissance.
