Minimum Viable Population (MVP) estimates the smallest population size with a reasonable chance of surviving long-term genetic, demographic, and environmental risks - a core concept in conservation biology used to set recovery targets for threatened species.

Minimum Census Population = Effective Population Size Needed / (Ne/N Ratio)

Example

Targeting an effective population size of 500 (per the commonly cited "50/500 rule" for long-term evolutionary potential), with an effective-to-census ratio of 0.25:

Minimum Census Population = 500 / 0.25 = 2,000 individuals

Why the Ratio Matters

The effective population size (Ne) is almost always smaller than the actual census population (N) you'd count in the field, due to unequal sex ratios, variance in reproductive success, and population fluctuations over time - a typical Ne/N ratio observed across wildlife studies often falls somewhere between 0.1 and 0.5, meaning conservation targets expressed in Ne must be scaled up substantially to get a realistic census population goal.

The "50/500 Rule"
