Water use efficiency (WUE) measures how much growth a plant produces per unit of water it loses through transpiration - a key comparison metric across plant species and crop varieties, especially relevant to agriculture in water-limited regions.

WUE = Biomass Produced (g) / Water Transpired (L)

Example

50 grams of biomass produced using 20 liters of transpired water:

WUE = 50 / 20 = 2.5 g biomass per liter

C4 vs. C3 Photosynthesis

Plants using C4 photosynthesis (such as corn, sugarcane, and many tropical grasses) generally show notably higher water use efficiency than C3 plants (such as wheat, rice, and most trees), because C4 plants concentrate CO2 internally before fixing carbon, allowing them to keep their stomata (leaf pores) more closed and lose less water per unit of carbon fixed.

Why This Matters for Agriculture

In drought-prone or water-limited growing regions, crop selection based on water use efficiency can meaningfully affect both yield reliability and total irrigation demand - breeding programs increasingly target improved WUE directly as climate change intensifies water scarcity in many major agricultural regions.
